Comparison
Subscription or lease? Here's how to actually decide
On paper, on a comparison site, these two look almost interchangeable. In practice they behave very differently. Here's where each one is genuinely the wrong pick.
It comes down to commitment, more than anything else. A car subscription runs a short minimum term and then rolls monthly, so the car goes back whenever you give notice — and you pay extra every month for holding that right. A short-term lease fixes the number of months upfront at a lower monthly cost, with a settlement figure due if you break it early. Can you name the exact month you'll hand the car back, and would you put money on it? Lease. Not sure? Subscribe.

Choose by situation
Subscribe if…
- Your job, location or family situation could change within a year
- You're testing an electric car for the first time
- You're between cars and waiting on a sale or a delivery
- You're new to the UK and not yet settled

Lease if…
- You know the month you'll hand the car back
- Monthly cost is the deciding factor
- You need the car for six months or more
- Your mileage is predictable and above average
- You want a specific model and specification
- The vehicle is for a permanent role or settled requirement
Method
A worked way to decide
Ask us to quote the same vehicle two ways: as a subscription, and as a fixed lease for the term you think you need. Then do this arithmetic.
- Take the monthly difference between the two quotes.
- Multiply it by the number of months you expect to keep the car. That's what flexibility is costing you in total.
- Ask us for the indicative early settlement on the lease at the halfway point.
- If the settlement figure is bigger than the flexibility premium — and there's any real chance you'd need to use it — take the subscription.
