Plug-in Hybrid vehicles, available now
A rechargeable battery for genuine short-trip electric range, plus a petrol or diesel engine for everything beyond it — and a materially lower benefit-in-kind rate for business drivers.
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) covers most daily London driving on electric power alone if you charge it regularly, then falls back to its combustion engine for longer journeys with no range anxiety at all. For company car drivers, the benefit-in-kind rate sits well below an equivalent petrol or diesel car, which is why PHEVs are so often chosen through salary sacrifice. The trade-off: economy drops sharply if it's never actually plugged in, so it only pays off if home or office charging is realistic.
